What It Costs
From $23 to $211 across four cities. What each price band actually buys, and where the value sits.
$23 to $211 across everything we track. The band tells you the format more reliably than the description does.
Under $40 - a Museum or a Show
- Samurai Ninja Museum guided tour, Kyoto - $23 (548 reviews)
- Kembu sword-dancing show, Kyoto - $31 (473 reviews)
- Modern samurai variety show, Osaka - $38 (388 reviews)
You are buying a guided visit or an evening’s performance. All three rate well for what they are. None of them is a lesson.
$50-$105 - the Real Lessons
- Sword class, Kyoto - $63 (825 reviews)
- Kendo with full armour and gear, Kyoto - $101 (1,147 reviews)
- Swordsmanship at a temple, Kanazawa - $85
- Bushido trial cutting, Osaka - $90
- Castle and samurai walking tour, Kanazawa - $53
This is where the value is. Two hours, an English-speaking instructor, equipment included. Almost everything worth booking sits in this band, and the difference between its bottom and its top is format, not quality.
$125-$211 - Private, Master-Led, or a Craft
- Kendo training, Osaka - $125
- Ninja weapon forging, Kyoto - $145
- Full-day samurai, matcha, gardens and geisha, Kanazawa - $140
- Private session with a sword master, Osaka - $211
Worth it for a small group who want the instructor’s attention, or for the forge, where the price buys the object you take home.
Everything Is Per Person
Which is the one thing that catches families out. A four-person booking of a $101 lesson is over $400. That is still the format we recommend for families - you spar against each other, and it is the version people remember - but budget for it as a party, not a ticket.
Where to Save
- Book the show instead of the lesson if you mainly want the imagery.
- Take the Kanazawa walking tour at $53 if context matters more than holding a sword.
- Skip the second museum. The Samurai Ninja Museum runs in more than one city and the tours are similar; one is enough.
- Do not pay for a private session unless the group is small enough that the per-head arithmetic works.
Pick Your City
Kyoto for the depth, Osaka for the value, Kanazawa for the setting, Tokyo for the museum. The pages above have the real prices and review counts for each.
