"My grandchildren and I had a fabulous time. The lessons were very well explained. The history was also very interesting. We had water breaks after every lessons. The costumes made us feel like real Samurais. The coaches were very pleasant. Meditation was part of the activity which was nice. I highly recommend this learning and fun activity to families. It’s very good for self esteem."

How the Osaka Kendo Training Runs
Lecture, armour, the basics, then practice.
The Lecture
A short grounding in what kendo is and where it came from, in English, before any equipment goes on.
Into the Armour
Helmet, chest protector and gauntlets. Heavier and hotter than it looks, and putting it on properly is part of the lesson.
The Basic Strikes
Footwork first, then the main cuts with the bamboo shinai, drilled until they are repeatable.
Practice
Applying it under the instructor's eye. The class is small, which is why it holds a five-star rating on a small sample.

Osaka's Range
What Osaka Has That Kyoto Does Not
Osaka’s Argument
Osaka is not the deepest samurai city — Kyoto is — but it has the widest range, and two things Kyoto’s listings do not emphasise.
Trial cutting. The Bushido session at $90 puts you through tameshigiri, actual slashing practice with a samurai sword against a target. 84 reviews at 4.8. It is the most direct answer to “but do you actually cut anything” that this category offers.
A genuine private option. $211 buys a private session training with a sword master rather than a shared class. 54 reviews at 5.0. Expensive per head, and the obvious choice for two or three people who want the instructor’s full attention.
And the Show, Which Is Not a Lesson
The $38 modern samurai, kabuki, ninja, taiko and dance show is the most-reviewed samurai-tagged product in Osaka at 388 reviews — and it is dinner theatre, not martial arts. It is good at what it is. Do not book it expecting to hold a sword.
Kyoto or Osaka?
If you are visiting both, do the lesson in Kyoto and the show in Osaka — the depth is in Kyoto and the entertainment is here. If you are only in Osaka, the kendo training class on this page is a real lesson and there is no reason to travel for it.
The cities are half an hour apart by train, so “only in Osaka” is more of a scheduling constraint than a geographic one.

What Guests Say
"We had an amazing time doing this Samurai experience in Osaka! It was just me and my son, and it ended up being one of our favorite experiences in Japan. The couple who taught the class were incredibly knowledgeable, kind, and welcoming. They made us feel comfortable right away and did a great job explaining everything. We got to put on traditional Kendo gear, learn some basic Kendo techniques, and even pose with swords for photos. It was physical to your own comfort level and so much fun! The photos/videos were an especially wonderful part of the experience. They took so many great pictures of us, and the digital photos they sent afterward were **extremely high quality**. We now have beautiful photos that we’ll always have to remember the experience. I highly recommend this experience if you’re visiting Osaka. It was fun, unique, hands-on, and a really special experience to share with my son. We absolutely loved it! 🥷🏻🇯🇵"

"Top Event! We highly recommend it! Very nice Kendo-practise and Teachers. Thank You very much to Toshihiko and Kumiko 🌸🌸🌸🌸🌸"
"The place is very beautiful and very clean, and the staff is very welcoming. The gear is high quality and very clean. The team communicates very well in English. After a short introduction to the history of kendo, the various basic movements of kendo are explained. It's very well explained and accessible to everyone. Photos and videos are taken care of, and you will receive them quickly. The team's kindness and thoughtfulness are remarkable. This experience will remain etched in our memory."
"We were looking for a martial arts experience to do with our two sons during our trip to Japan, and this was one of the highlights of our stay in Osaka. Toshi was an excellent instructor, and together with his wife they made us feel very welcome. Both speak great English, making everything easy to understand. We learned the basics of kendo, wore authentic samurai armor, and even had exciting sparring sessions. The photo session by Toshi’s wife was outstanding, and there was plenty of time to take videos and create unforgettable memories. We were three participants, including our youngest son who is 9 years old. The instructors were incredibly patient, professional, and always made sure he felt safe and included. If you’re visiting Osaka, don’t miss this experience. It’s fun, authentic, family-friendly, and a fantastic way to experience Japanese culture. Highly recommended!"

"It was challenging and a rewarding experience. Mr Toshi is an enthusiastic and knowledegable teacher."
"This was a highlight of our Japan trip for my two teens. It was informative and interactive - and we got so many great photos and videos afterward as well. Great way to spend a morning in Osaka!"

"This was the first activity that we booked once we knew we were going to Japan, and oh boy, what a great time we had! Toshi's professionalism and humor, combined with Fumiko's organizational talent made this experience one of the best we had in Japan. It was great to learn new facts on how Kendo came to be and at the same time experience doing it hands on. This is a fun / learn activity for everyone who is interested in Japanese culture, and in my opinion one that should not be missed. Thank you Toshi, Fumiko and grandma"

Lessons, trial cutting, and the show that is not a lesson.
The kendo training class at $125 - 177 reviews at 5.0 - because it is a real lesson with the equipment provided. The Bushido trial-cutting session at $90 is the one to pick if you specifically want to cut something, and the private session with a sword master at $211 is the right call for two or three people who want undivided attention. The $38 variety show is the most-reviewed product in the city but it is dinner theatre, not a lesson.
Kyoto for depth, Osaka for range - and they are half an hour apart by train, so most visitors can have both. Kyoto holds the best-reviewed kendo lesson in the country and the only forging workshop. Osaka's advantage is the spread: a $38 show, a $90 trial-cutting session and a $211 private class, which Kyoto does not match at either end. If you are doing both cities, take the lesson in Kyoto and the show in Osaka.
Only in a trial-cutting session - and Osaka's Bushido class at $90 is the clearest example of one. Tameshigiri, cutting practice against a target with a real blade, is a separate discipline from kendo, which is fought with a bamboo shinai against a person in armour. Most listings that say samurai experience mean the second. If cutting is the thing you want, book the one that says so.
Yes, if you know it is a show - 388 reviews at 4.7 says it performs well at what it is. It combines modern samurai performance with kabuki, ninja, taiko and dance, and it is an evening's entertainment rather than instruction. Book it as a night out. Book the kendo class if you want to hold something.
