Samurai Experience in Kyoto

Kyoto has the deepest samurai supply in Japan and the least obvious choice: a $23 museum ticket and a $145 forging workshop are both sold as a samurai experience. This page sorts the five by what you actually want to do.

The Experience

What the Kyoto Sword Class Includes

From the operator's own listing.

Highlights

  • Attend a samurai lesson in Kyoto
  • Learn from a samurai master how to bow,
  • how to draw a sword, and strike with stylized movements
  • Enjoy a photo session in your costume and receive a completion certificate

What's Included

  • English-speaking instructor
  • Photo shoot
  • Tenugui" towel (traditional towel from Japan)
  • Completion certificate

How the Kyoto Sword Class Runs

Attire, stance, the draw, cutting technique - about two hours.

  1. Dressed in Training Attire

You change into traditional training attire before anything else. It sets the register of the session, and it is what the photographs at the end will show.

  2. The Stance and the Grip

More time goes here than people expect, because every cut depends on it. The instructors teach it the way they were taught, which is slowly.

  3. Drawing and Sheathing

Its own discipline, and the part most first-timers find hardest. Getting a katana back into the saya cleanly is harder than swinging it.

  4. Cutting Technique

The angle, the follow-through and the stop, then a demonstration. About two hours in total, though practice time varies with group size.

Sorting the Five

Which Kyoto Samurai Experience Fits You

The Five, Sorted by What You Want

To fight - the kendo lesson, $101. Full armour, bamboo sword, then a match. 1,147 reviews at 4.8, the deepest sample of any samurai product in Japan. The right pick for groups and families.

To handle the blade - the sword class, $63. The page you are on. Precision rather than exertion; works well for a pair.

To make something - ninja weapon forging, $145. 636 reviews. Heat, tools and a keepsake, and stricter age limits.

To watch - the Kembu show, $31. Sword dancing with narrated history from the 12th to the 19th century, a short hands-on section, a costume photo and a certificate. Seated and cheaper.

To tour - the Samurai Ninja Museum, $23. The budget entry point.

Why Kyoto Rather Than Anywhere Else

Kyoto’s advantage is not that the products are unique — Osaka has kendo too — but that the review depth here is an order of magnitude greater, which for a category this easy to do badly is the whole signal. The city also holds the only forging workshop we track and the only regular Kembu show.

For a single-minded look at the Kyoto kendo option specifically, samuraiexperiencekyoto.com is an independent guide to that one city.

Practical

Sessions are small, and the well-rated ones sell out in cherry-blossom season and in autumn. Book the whole party in one reservation. Allow a half day with travel, and do not schedule anything tight afterwards.
