A Lesson in a Temple · From $85

Samurai Experience in Kanazawa

Kanazawa has the smallest samurai supply of the four cities and the best context for it. The swordsmanship lesson is taught in a temple, and the Nagamachi samurai district - earthen walls, surviving residences, still lived in - is a short walk away.

How the Temple Lesson Runs

A small group, a temple space, and swordsmanship taught as a discipline.

  1. A Temple, Not a Studio

The lesson runs in a temple space rather than a commercial dojo, which is most of why people book this one over a bigger city's equivalent.

  2. Grounding in the Discipline

Swordsmanship taught as a practice with a history, not as a photo opportunity. Small groups.

  3. The Forms

Stance, draw and cut, at the pace the space suggests.

  4. Nagamachi Afterwards

The preserved samurai district is a short walk from the centre - earthen walls, surviving residences, and the Nomura family house open to visitors.

The Small City

Why Kanazawa Is Worth It If You Are Already Going

Small Supply, Real Context

Three or four bookable products against Kyoto’s twenty. What Kanazawa has instead is a city that still looks the part.

Nagamachi is the preserved samurai district at the foot of the castle: earthen walls, narrow lanes, and surviving residences including the Nomura house, which is open to visitors. Unlike a reconstructed attraction it is a lived-in neighbourhood. Walking it after a swordsmanship lesson is the whole argument for doing this here rather than in Kyoto.

Kanazawa Castle and Kenroku-en sit next to it. The castle-and-samurai-history walking tour at $53 (261 reviews at 4.9) is the best-reviewed samurai-tagged product in the city and covers that ground properly.

Who Should Book Here

Do not travel to Kanazawa for the samurai experience. Kyoto’s is deeper and Osaka’s is cheaper. But Kanazawa is a strong stop on its own account — the gardens, the crafts, the fish market — and if you are going anyway, this is the most atmospheric version of the experience in Japan.

The full-day option at $140 bundles samurai sites with matcha, gardens and the geisha district, which is a sensible use of a single day in a city where the individual sites sit close together.

Getting There

Kanazawa is on the Hokuriku Shinkansen, about two and a half hours from Tokyo and roughly the same from Kyoto via Osaka. It is a common two-night stop between Tokyo and Kyoto rather than a destination in itself.
